reading this feels like a delicious brunch, so satisfying. I can't help but think this hints at a permanent local hub for smart/woo people to work/play together. I wonder if Porto is a realistic contender for getting critical mass of the kinds of people you want to attract. what do you think? would people move there more long term?
I think it’s a contender, although I still need to hone in on who it is for and who it isn’t. Porto has a lot going for it.
- It’s one of the most beautiful cities I know,
- it’s cheap relative to the rest of Europe,
- great food,
- has beach and great nature nearby,
- and plenty of flights to the rest of Europe and the US.
It’s not a huge city so there’s not a lot of economic opportunity and no infinite pool of talent to draw from. Remote work is def the better setup, and we do get a steady stream of pretty amazing people on their way to the Garden, or just coming to visit since it’s a popular tourist destination in its own right. There’s also an abundance of intentional communities in Portugal which people come check out regularly.
while i don’t plan to leave nyc, i could imagine visiting porto once a year for a month (although i didn’t come to portal because of having a new baby). especially if you timed it with a garden event

The art scene punches waaaay above its weight
